The “Object” Menu
The “Object” Menu provides functions for dealing with the objects in your Maya scene (such as polygon meshes, NURBS, curves, locators, cameras etc). The menu is located on the right-hand controller and can be opened by pressing the left side of the touch-pad (HTC Vive and Windows MR) or pushing the thumb-stick to the left (Oculus Touch or Valve Knuckles controllers).
The following items are available in the menu:
Delete History, Freeze Transformations, Center Pivot, Delete
Delete
Select this item to delete the currently selected objects.
Delete History
Delete the object history, clearing all the nodes in the Channelbox that were used to edit the object.
Freeze Transformations
Freeze object transformations.
Center Pivot
Center rotation/scale pivot.
Group And Parent
This item opens a sub-menu for grouping and parenting objects. The following items are available in the sub-menu:
Group
Create a new group that contains all the currently selected objects.
Ungroup
Delete the current group and re-parent the objects in the group to the next parent.
Parent
The last selected object will become the new parent to the other selected objects.
Unparent
Re-parent the objects which are children of the selected object, so that the hierarchy is flat again.
Open the Maya Outliner
Open the Maya Outliner in VR as a floating window. The Maya Outliner provides quick and easy access to all objects in the scene.
Open the Layer Editor
Open the Layer Editor in VR as a floating window. Maya display layers are an alternative way to group objects together that does not allow group transformations, but offers features such as making all objects on the layer transparent or un-selectable (“reference layer”).
Duplicate and Duplicate Special
Duplicate the currently selected objects. Duplicate Special adds additional parameters to the newly created objects during duplication.
Transform
This item opens the Transform menu, which allows simple and precise transformation of your currently selected objects such as “rotate by 90 degrees clockwise” or “align selected objects along the x-axis”.
The following items are available in this menu.
Switch Pivot / Coordinate System
This item allows you to switch between using the world (global) coordinate system or the object (local) coordinate system.
Rotate
This item allows rotating the selected objects or components in discreet steps such as “90 degrees around the x-axis” or “180 degrees around the z axis.
Flip
This item performs a mirror transformation (scale by minus one) on the selected objects or components.
Align
This item moves all selected objects to their average position.
For example, if you have five objects and want them all positioned perfectly side-by-side along the x direction, select all of them and align them in the y and z directions.
Center
This item centers the selected objects or components on the x, y, or z axis respectively.
For example, if you need an object to be placed perfectly on the Maya grid, you can “center” it on y=0, which will move it in height to align with the Maya grid.
Snap Pivot
This item moves the pivot of one object to align with the pivot of another object.
Select first the object whose pivot you want to edit, then the object whose pivot you want to use.
For example, if you want a planet to rotate around a star, select first the planet, then the star, and then activate “snap pivot”. This will set the planet’s pivot to be at the place of the star, so you can easily make the planet revolve around the star by simply rotating it.
